In a small co-operative on the banks of Lake Atitlan in a village called Santiago Atitlan in Guatemala, several hard working women create incredible fabrics on back strap looms. This old technique is slowly dying out as modern machines take over such work, so the co-op helps to preserve the art as well as to keep these women employed.
Huipil is the Spanish name for the pancho style shirt often worn by women in Guatemala. Our Huipil Scoop bag is crafted from these beautiful hand-embroidered shirts. The embroidery designs vary by tribe then by village then by family and then by seniority of the woman. It is one way they identify each other in the markets. Features include a silky lining, magnetic snap closure and one zippered pocket inside. The fabric is 100% cotton.
Since each bag is made from an individual huipil, each one is unique, therefore styles will vary slightly.
