| | African Family of 5 Shona Stone Sculpture (Zimbabwe)
The Shona stone sculpture of Zimbabwe is prized in art museums and galleries worldwide. Shona sculptors quarry and select their own stone and carve it using only hand tools. Their modern designs are derived from nature and the artists’ vast reserves of cultural traditions. Among the most appealing of these works of art are the Ukama - or "Loving Families" - sculptures, which depict mothers and their children, whole families, and couples embraced in love and dancing with joy.
This ukama sculpture, made from rapoka stone, is designed by Tendayi Munemo who carves and polishes his sculptures by hand to produce family groups of unusual beauty. Tendayi was born in 1972 in Chivhu, the first child in a family of 4 boys and 3 girls. He started carving in 1989 through the guidance of an artist named Murehwa who taught him not only sculpting but where to find the stone. Tendayi particularly enjoys carving abstract creations. He attended his first exhibition held in Harare Gardens in 1993 and is now working at the Chitungwiza Arts Centre. Tendayi is married with 2 children.
