| | Shona stone family sculpture (Zimbabwe)
The Shona stone sculptures of Zimbabwe are prized in art museums and galleries worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Rodin Museum in Paris. Though a relatively young art form, the popularity of Shona sculpture has grown quickly and it now provides steady income for the artisans and their families. Shona sculptors quarry and select their own stone often preferring serpentine because of its incredible hardness and elegant multi-color finish (as seen in our torso sculpture). They rarely sketch a work in preparation, preferring to work directly on the stone, and often work more than one piece at a time.
Our stone family sculpture is elegantly carved using only hand tools by Shona sculptors in Zimbabwe. It features two parents and a child, all holding hands to stress the importance of the family bond.
